A long time ago when Holeyuva Betta ( a.k.a. Shining Hill) faced a sudden outbreak of illnesses, a village guruji declared that Tamasasur (the Night Demon) had cursed the town. He then called upon a powerful priest to perform a mahayagya.
After performing the complex rituals, the priest could finally contain the curse within a small part of the forest, now called the Night Demon's Pit- a chasm of darkness like the gaping mouth of a demon.
Both the pit and its vicinity are still believed to be under the Demon's curse, and are now forbidden parts of the town.
It was believed that anyone who stepped into the cursed land would never return alive as the Night Demon would kill them and trap their soul in his lair inside the waters of the pit.
Reality? Or mere folklore?
