Fun. Colorful. Epic. Euphoric. This is the Mahalaya Utsava.

The Mahalaya Utsava is celebrated every year in Holeyuva Betta (Shining Hill) on the night of the mahalaya amavasya (new moon).
It commemorates the day when a priest conducted complex rituals to contain the night demon’s curse over the town, within a chasm inside the forest, known as the night demon’s pit.
Traditionally, a puja was held during the night, rituals were conducted and offerings were made to Goddess Durga so that She would protect the town from the night demon’s curse.

Over the years it has turned into a kind of carnival and celebrated in epic proportions where people dress up in colorful costumes and make merry.

13 years ago, on this night Adhira Rao’s life changed forever and she plunged into an eternal abyss of pain and guilt.
